    Post New to Electric Drums

After trying an electric drum kit out in a Best Buy, I realized how cool they are. I'm interested in buying an electric drum set but have don't want to pay for an expensive kit. THe one I played was A roland 5 drum set with 3 cymbals and all the heads were a mesh material. I would like to buy a drum kit like that, but avoid the large price tag $2,560. Are there any kits that are similar to this but are cheaper? Does anyone have any suggestions for cheaper electric drum sets out there? And can you add on extra drum pads and cymbal pads to an electric kit? Answering any of these questions would be greatly appreciated.

yes, and no. Keep an eye on ebay and craigslist, but e-kits are just pricy in general. You can check out yamaha's DTX Express (which has rubber toms). The lower end (but still decent e-kits) run:

    Yamaha DTXpress

    Alesis DM6 Kit

    Alesis DM5 Kit

    Roland TD4S kit

    Roland Lite Kit

I found an alesis dm5 pro kit w/ surge cymbals for $625. Think it is a good kit? Also, could I add extra cymbals and toms to this kit?

DM5 is a decent beginner level kit. It's certainly not on par with Roland kits, but it's not bad, either. I'm unsure of how much you can add on to it. There's a certain amount of inputs in the back. Check it out.

Thanks for all the help dude. you've been very helpful. I've been playing drums for a while, but my acoustic drumset and close neighbors has been a difficult struggle. I haven't been able to play as much and I want to be able to play whenever i want. I'll probably choose between Alesis DM10 or the Roland TD9SX. Would it be worth the extra 1,000 for the Roland?

I would, if you can, get to a store and see if you can play on either one or both. I've played on a Roland TD-9 and it was quite nice, but I've never played an Alesis DM10 so I could not give you a value difference.
